Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain is a common ailment affecting individuals from various backgrounds and ages. It typically involves discomfort, stiffness, or limited range of motion in the shoulder joint and surrounding muscles. Numerous factors can contribute to shoulder pain, including injuries, overuse, poor posture, and underlying medical conditions such as arthritis, tendinitis, or rotator cuff tears. Accurately identifying the cause of shoulder pain is crucial for determining the most effective treatment options and preventing further complications.
The impact of shoulder pain on daily activities can be significant, as it may hinder an individual's ability to perform routine tasks, engage in sports, or maintain a healthy lifestyle. Recognizing the various factors contributing to shoulder pain and seeking timely intervention can significantly improve the overall quality of life. Prompt diagnosis and targeted treatment can often lead to successful management of shoulder pain and restoration of normal function.

Frozen Shoulder: Adhesive capitalistic, or frozen shoulder, is one of the most painful shoulder conditions due to its persistence, long recovery and ever-growing pain. This condition occurs when the capsule of connective tissue that houses your shoulder joint thickens and becomes tight and restrictive around the joint. The exact cause for this condition is unknown, although those recovering from shoulder surgery or other procedures restricting movement are generally more at risk of developing it. Dr. Brett Warfield is a non-invasive shoulder specialist in Houston providing treatment for frozen shoulder treatment. Symptoms include:
Pain. This comes on gradually and may become severe. Frozen shoulder pain often worsens at night or when you move your shoulder joint.
Stiffness. This can stop you from moving your shoulder usually. It can make it difficult to do everyday tasks such as driving or dressing yourself.
Rotator Cuff: Injuries are common and seem to increase with age. This is primarily due to the wear and tear within the shoulder joint components that allow for looser movement. People engaged in certain occupations requiring using their arms in overhead operations can be prone to rotator cuff syndrome. Examples include professional athletes and contractors. Symptoms may include:
-
Pain at rest and at night, mainly if lying on the affected shoulder.
-
Pain when lifting and lowering your arm or with specific movements.
-
Weakness when lifting or rotating your arm.
-
Crepitus, or a crackling sensation, when moving your shoulder in certain positions.
Our shoulder pain specialist in Houston will perform a comprehensive exam and evaluation to determine the extent of your rotator cuff injury, including ultrasound, x-rays, and possibly an MRI. An accurate picture of the shoulder joint components is required to make the best treatment recommendations.
Arthritis: Some people get osteoarthritis starting as early as age 50, which causes painful movement. This happens as the smooth surfaces of the cartilage that line the bones of the shoulder joint are worn away, and joints start to wear out. The most common cause of osteoarthritis is overuse. Treatments for arthritis in your shoulder depend on the severity of your pain.
Shoulder Impingement Syndrome: This condition results from a vicious cycle of rubbing the rotator cuff between your humerus and the top outer edge of your shoulder. The rubbing leads to more swelling and further narrowing of the space, which results in pain and irritation. Symptoms may include:
-
Pain when your arms are extended above your head or lying on the affected side.
-
Pain when lifting your arm, lowering your arm from a raised position, or when reaching.
-
Tenderness in the front of your shoulder.
-
Pain that moves from the front of your shoulder to the side of your arm.
-
Pain when reaching behind your back, like reaching into a back pocket or zipping up a zipper.
-
Shoulder and/or arm weakness and stiffness.
Bursitis: is tiny, fluid-filled sacs within your joints that help cushion and reduce friction. When these sacs become irritated and inflamed, the condition is called bursitis. Shoulder bursitis can occur from injury, overuse, or degenerative conditions that cause inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Our shoulder pain specialist in Houston offers excellent non-invasive shoulder bursitis treatment at Texas Intergrative Pain Institute. Common symptoms of shoulder bursitis can include:
-
Discomfort when lying on your shoulder.
-
Pain on the outside or top of your shoulder
-
Pain gets worse when you lift your arm to the side.
-
Pain when pushing on or opening a door.
-
Pain when trying to “circle” your arm.
-
Pressure and pain when pushing on the top of your shoulder.
